Abstract

All of this was changed by the 1973 US Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which established a constitutional right to abortion in the USA. Hobby Lobby were able to exercise this freedom to acquire an exemption to a requirement (under the US Affordable Care Act) that they cover the cost of particular contraceptive services, through insurance schemes, for their female employees. 2 Contributors to this issue push debates about conscientious objection in healthcare in a number of directions.
