Abstract
Rural mental health outcomes are consistently poorer than those in Australian capital cities. The Orange Declaration on rural and remote mental health (1) posited ten interrelated challenges and ten solutions. These centred around ten evidence themes: contextual variance – one size does not fit all; consistently poor rural health outcomes; connecting policy, people and place; service versus people-centred approaches; funding and investment; system-level fragmentation and service instability; care provision—scope, scale and emphasis; care provision—scope, scale and emphasis; workforce capacity, capability and sustainability; technology—component or solution; data, research, evaluation and organisational continuous learning.
The declaration invited discussion on how we can collaboratively improve rural mental health outcomes through research, service design and delivery. To advance this discussion, we would like to consider rural mental health research practice, support and policy.
At this WHRN meeting, we would like to hear from researchers in Western NSW as part of a wider consultation to inform the development of a national and international statement on rural mental health research practice, values and policy. We invite you to consider what challenges you face, what supports you value and what changes would empower you to conduct high-quality research that is meaningful and impactful in the rural communities that you work with. This will be an interactive session, with your feedback to contribute to the paper, and we will invite you to endorse it when complete in 2024. This work is being conducted in conjunction with the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL) – Rural Behavioural Health Collaborative. The Australian component is being led by Charles Sturt University, in collaboration with the Manna Institute and the University of Canberra Mental Health Policy Unit.
