Abstract

The CSU Animation and Visual Effects Showcase 2013 is a completely remastered production of the original source material from the 2013 Graduate Screening for the unique demands of online distribution and widest broadcast compliance on existing/emerging digital formats. Since the entering the degree in 2011, the students had evolved from basic hand-drawn 2D art through to sophisticated internationally-competitive 3D animations over 3 dedicated years. Embracing the rich history of traditional animation with the latest advances in industry-leading software, the students had meticulously crafted every frame (often with many layers) for the audience. The edit was 36 minutes runtime representing over 54,000 frames of work and twice the number for stereoscopic versions. Each film has been professionally treated to maximise various data rates and frame sizes; from 176x144 3GPP to Full HD 3D Stereoscopic Side-by-Side 1080p MP4 formats. Video problems were corrected in industry standard compositing/non-linear software and audio normalised for a consistent playback. The source footage has not been modified in any way that compromises the original look of the production and full acknowledgment of students' intellectual property is respected. The videos are copyright protected and watermarked by a subtle university logo in accordance with CSU branding policies. Several films have now gone on to be independently selected for the Melbourne International Animation Festival 2014 and the CSUAVFX YouTube channel has continually enjoyed substantial growth since its official launch on December 20, 2012.
