Culturally and linguistically diverse children in New Zealand schools

Abstract

No-one who has visited a New Zealand classroom in the last ten years could fail to notice the increase in cultural and linguistic diversity in the student population. This diversity is arguably one the most significant challenges for schools and teachers in the 21st century. This paper begins with a description of the current state of affairs with regard to cultural and linguistic diversity in New Zealand schools, and an examination of school and government responses to this diversity. In the second part, New Zealand-based research focusing on cultural and linguistic diversity is reviewed and it is suggested that there is a lack of research that focuses on the lived experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students within the mainstream context. It is suggested that there is a need for research with this focus because it has the potential to enhance our understanding of mainstream classrooms as complex sites of identity construction for CLD students.
