Abstract

This is a peer-reviewed 1000 word entry, resulting from original research into the Daily Telegraph newspaper for the reference work, A Companion to the Australian Media (Griffen-Foley, B., 2014). The Companion features more than 500 entries authored by more than 300 industry and scholarly experts on the past and present Australian media. It is an authoritative reference work for scholars, media practitioners and policy makers. The Daily Telegraph entry represents the outcome of original research using primary and secondary sources into the history of the Sydney based newspaper. I was invited to author the piece, based on my knowledge and experience as a journalism historian. As stated in the preliminary pages of the published Companion each entry was peer reviewed.
