Abstract

My presented paper was entitled: Death of the Art School: From Studio to Airport-Lounge of the Id. It addressed 'The Art School' as the province of clinical dissection rather than of making good art. The Art School has simultaneously privileged 'studio practice' whilst constructing its illegitimacy under the University model. The "studio" evolves into the cloud, and realigns the role of the tertiary Art School. It becomes an airport-lounge of the virtual. Regionalism, once all too readily equated with parochialism, dissolves as 'geography' disappears, and redefines the potential of the regional University to affirm practice-as-research in higher degree art studies. The conference theme was towards shifts in the tertiary education environment internationally in terms of evolving contexts of physical studio space and virtual space, in locating art practice and the new forms of education now engaged. The conference title was:Locations of Practice, Sites for Creativity: From the Studio to the Cloud University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, National Art School 25-27 September, 2013 The ACUADS 2013 Conference was convened by three major Australian tertiary institutes: College of Fine Arts, UNSW, National Art School and Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. It included speakers on a national and international level, across the Australian University sector, and liaison with the College of Art & Design - 'OCAD University' in Canada.
