Abstract
A gas in contact with water will dissolve in the latter to some extent, the concentration being determined by temperature, the nature and partial pressure of the gas, and the nature and concentration of other species [ 1 ]. The solubility of different gases varies widely as seen in Table 1, being lowest for inert gases and relatively high for polar, ionizable species such as ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide. Solubilities for the latter group are also pH-dependent.
