Diversity in children's literature

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

Diversity in children’s and young adult literature has been a hot topic of discussion for some time now. Studies have been conducted on the representation of minority groups in literature for children and young adults and there has been a push from readers, authors and librarians for publishers to include more diverse literature in their lists. While the representation of diverse backgrounds and groups has increased (School Library Journal, 2019) we also need to ensure our readers are adventurous in their choices. After arriving at Toowoomba Grammar School I soon realised many of the boys re-read books or series. Not being are-reader myself, I was curious to find out why, so began dabbling in some research about boys and their recreational reading, defined here as reading for enjoyment and leisure.
