Draw, Talk, Write, and Share (DTWS)

Research output: Book chapter/Published conference paperChapter

Abstract

In Chapter 10 the pedagogical approach to early writing referred to as Draw, Talk, Write, and Share (DTWS) is introduced. This approach is based upon research conducted by the author that identified strong relationships between drawing, talking, and early writing. DTWS utilises the two modes of meaning-making children often use very successfully when they start school: drawing and talking. The approach has been shown to work successfully in the first few years of school but has also been adapted for preschool and as an observation tool. Illustrations of practice from classrooms support the chapter. Reflection prompts are inserted throughout the chapter, and recommended readings are provided.
