Abstract
This chapter defines ecosystem services and describes how the ecosystem service concept has evolved within the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and subsequent Resolutions. It discusses the values that different provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting wetland ecosystem services provide, and examines who, in society, receives the benefits from these services. Information is provided on currently available tools and techniques for assessing ecosystem services in terms of quantification, monetisation, or other forms of valuation. The chapter concludes by discussing how to bring ecosystem services into the mainstream of decision-making processes.
