Abstract

Edward Balfour sparkles in the history ofscience of Madras Presidency as a polymath. He also features prominently indifferent roles as an administrator. Startingas an army surgeon, he retired as thechief administrator of Madras Medical Department. In whichever work outfit he was, Balfour achieved the best outcome; his enthusiasm towards development ofscience is imminent. His profundity inmeticulously documenting his observationson diverse aspects of science, medicine, biology, agriculture, forestry, anthropology and astronomy is stunning.
