Abstract

Very low bit rate video coding using patterns to represent moving regions in macroblocks for block based coding affords very good potential for improved coding efficiency. A large number of patterns in codebook used in pattern based advanced video coding can better approximate the true shape of the moving regions but a larger codebook requires more bits for pattern identification code which restricts the codebook size in actual applications. Instead of using fixed length coding a variable length coding tech-nique is already established its potentiality. In this paper we proposed a new strategy of pattern identification code which also uses variable length code applied on the differ-ential positions of patterns instead of pattern frequency. Experimental results confirm that new strategy not only requires fewer bits than the previous approach but also saves memory needed by the previous approach to store the look up table for pattern variable length codes.
