Abstract
The current National Curriculum initiatives provide a good opportunity for English in Australia, as a distinctive curriculum project, to be reviewed and hopefully renewed. This paper takes up various themes and challenges in the recent Shaping Paper for English in the National Curriculum, and goes on to consider the particular value of 'rhetoric' and 'democracy' as reference-points for curriculum renewal in English teaching.
