Abstract

In 2024 the NSW Sheriff's Office (NSWSO) conducted a pilot trial of Body-Worn Cameras (BWCs) to evaluate their impact on workplace efficiency, effectiveness, and officer safety. This report presents findings from a comprehensive evaluation conducted by the Regional Work and Organisational Resilience (RWOR) Research Group at Charles Sturt University, drawing on quantitative and qualitative data collected through multiple surveys and in-depth interviews with officers, stakeholders, management, and union representatives.
The evaluation focused on key areas including workplace health and safety, training requirements, enforcement capabilities, everyday work practices, stakeholder perceptions as well as the impact of BWC on the behaviour of the public, and Sheriff Officer professionalism and accountability. While acknowledging limitations in sample size and trial duration, the evaluation findings provide evidence that could support NSWSO's decision-making regarding potential broader implementation of BWCs.
