Abstract

The chapter examines the Chinese government’s practices in preventing and controlling the spread of COVID-19 since 2020. Drawing on one of the co-authors’ lived experiences in Zhengzhou, this chapter critically considers some of the impacts of the Zhengzhou Municipality government’s pandemic-control methods, particularly during COVID-19 outbreaks in August and December 2021 and May 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic and the strict pandemic-control measures implemented by governments have impacted people’s well-being and economies in many nations across the globe. Zhengzhou is not immune from these impacts. This chapter shows that social workers based in the Community Residential Autonomous Association (CRAA) in China struggled to both support the choice and control of individuals and assist local governments in implementing strict pandemic-control measures.
