Abstract
To get beyond the patent if complex nexus between 'experience' and 'symbols' brought out in this example, we need to note various different kinds of relationship between the two concepts. We will only be able to appreciate these relationships, however, if we first fillet the meaning of 'symbol' from the meanings of some closely related words: signal, symptom, sign and signifier. These words are often used in contradictory ways, but the conceptual distinctions they are used to make are fundamental.
