Abstract

The sustainability and growth of Small and Medium Enterprises is essential for the success and growth of all economies. One of the major impediments to SME growth and survival though is access to debt finance. This paper reports the findings of an empirical study into the factors which influence the decision to lend to SMEs. We surveying bank lending officers and find that SME characteristics including industry, size, age, legal status, use of professional advisory service firms, use of performance measures as well as planning, human resource and innovation measures are important factors considered in the decision to lend to SMEs. Awareness of the importance of these factors can assist borrowers to be able to access debt finance.
