Abstract
Luke-Acts has been of central importance for formulating the Pentecostal view of baptism in the Holy Spirit. This dissertation first reviews the debate surrounding five events in Acts where Spirit baptism is reported: Pentecost, Samaria, the conversion of Saul, Caesarea, and Ephesus. It then proposes an alternative understanding of each of these events, which is then brought into dialogue with the conversion-initiation and commissioning-empowerment approaches, with a view to determining the function of Spirit baptism in Lukan theology.
