Abstract

Research Background
fourW was established to provide a publication platform that would be responsive to writers from the Riverina region, and situate new work in a context of work submitted from throughout Australia and overseas.
Research Contribution
From more than 500 individual works submitted around fifty poems and twenty short stories were selected (partly blind peer-review, partly by consensus) for their linguistic sinuousness, their capacity to surprise, delight and challenge readers. As a whole, the collection provides a unique sense of ‘place’, (in both its embrace of overt landscapes and its flights into textuality) and contributes to contemporary Australian writing’s engagement with ideas of relationship, location and articulation. Writers are varied by genre, gender and geography. Editing involves not only working with individual writers and pieces but having a sense of the patterning thematic and textual preoccupations of the new work.
Research Significance
For ‘newer’ writers, fourW is a first place of publication. Many of the individual works will later be published as part of author/theme collections, contributing to the national literary ‘capital’. fourW continues to be one of Australia’s ‘little magazines’ and in the Riverina it is a key cultural lens for creative output. fourW twenty-eight is distinctive for its new format - the shape of future volumes.
