Gender equity and inclusion in male-dominated industries in the Northern Territory

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

This paper explores the problem of gender segregation in the Northern Territory (NT) workforce. The NT presents a unique demographic and workforce profile that significantly influences the participation and representation of women in major industries in the NT. The NT Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-2025
(Northern Territory Government, 2023b) highlights that women in the NT are overrepresented in lower-paid, part-time, or precarious employment sectors, such as social work, childcare, healthcare, education, retail trade, and administrative support services. These sectors are traditionally undervalued compared to male-dominated industries like mining and construction, where women are currently underrepresented. Additionally, the Northern Territory Working Women's Centre (NTWWC, 2019) reports that women in remote areas often face workplace challenges, including bullying and sexual harassment.
