Abstract

This paper discusses the techniques and methods used during rehearsal process and performances of the early physio-vocal exploratory productions staged by the Voice Theatre Lab: White Dark (2007), an adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's Dr Faustus (2007, 2008), 5 (2008), The Oedipus Project (2009) and Iam Nocte (2010). These productions were a result of experiments that tookplace during training sessions from 2006 to 2010, and was inspired by aneclectic range of Eastern and Western performance practices and techniques, predominantly Butoh, and its affect on the voice. This paper will give an opportunity to review what was involved in the incorporation of previous work done by the cast in preparing for the final performance, such as drawing abstract imagery from the performance text. This resulted in the development of their own original Butoh-Fu score, which subsequently affected physical and vocal action. This form therefore makes way for an intercultural, integrative form of performance highlighting the voice from the 'inner world' of the performer.
