| Other | Ethnography has long called into question any confidence we might have in an unmediated access to ‘the real’, proposing instead an encounter with cultural difference both in relation to the other and to ourselves. Yet the impulse toward reducing our understanding of phenomenological experience persists in the dis-identification of the term ‘real’ across the arts and new media. This symposium will take up the question of the relationship between ethnographic practice and performance-making, challenge our thinking about ‘the (putative) real’, moving between, through and across ideas about the complicity of various forms of performance with claiming the representation of the real, representing it, co-constituting, and/or disputing it. |
