Abstract
Reflective practice is an exploration of experiences; a process that requires consideration of the self and one’s practice. The concept often means different things to different individuals and on a continuum could be just ad hoc sharing or discussing to more formal process and within clinical disciplines the skill is uniquely and deeply linked to the development of competence. There is limited understanding of the theories and philosophies that underpin the concept and there is not a great deal of guidance about how students might actually learn this skill. Along with no current consensus on what is an effective methodology for learning to be reflective, actually knowing when to integrate the skill into curriculum also remains unclear. With undergraduate nursing students in a regional Australian university, a mixed method approach evaluated the efficacy of a structured methodology applied in a reflective learning assessment. The activity was conducted prior to students attending allocated clinical placement. Multi-media supported scenarios were created and applied and the elements of the mnemonic, SPROUT - Situation, Previous learning, Read and refer, Other, and Take it forward, were applied as an on campus learning activity. Prior and following the activity, The Scale of Reflection in Learning was conducted with the students. Semi structured interviews with the educators were conducted following the teaching session. Data included the pre and post inventory outcomes, a review of student scripts and thematically analysed interview transcripts. Findings support the use of SPROUT for the enhancing of self-awareness and the provision of capacity for lifelong learning. Furthermore, also demonstrated was relevance for the positioning of a reflective practice assessment prior to clinical placement. Further substance and support for a methodology for the learning and assessment of reflective practice was also demonstrated.
