Abstract
This chapter deals with the interaction of the Christian Gospel and the issue of Human Rights in relation to the culture of Halmahera, Indonesia. This part of eastern Indonesia suffered serious social and political upheaval, and related violence, at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The chapter argues that the patterns of the development of Christianity and the spread of the Christian Gospel to particular types of societies, and their associated cultures, predisposed those situations to inter-tribal conflict under particular political circumstances. However, this type of scenario also held within it the possibility of resolution, and this appears to have occurred in these circumstances.
