Abstract
Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important model of learning as it fosters teamwork and collaboration; develops knowledge of other health profession’s role and scope of practice; and improves patient care and outcomes (Hopkins et al., 2022; Van Diggele et al., 2020). To provide these benefits to health students, IPE can be integrated into workplace learning, creating a discussion space for their experiences. Students can grow their own ideas and knowledge based on their experiences but also those of others. However, despite the importance of IPE opportunities for health students during workplace learning, it can be challenging to facilitate these opportunities when students are geographically spread across rural placement locations. In response to this, a rural health education team have developed a mini-series of interprofessional education opportunities facilitated online for students undertaking health placements in rural areas. Initially, the online sessions were developed to provide pastoral support and connection, with 47 students engaged in the sessions in the first half of 2023.
Reflecting on feedback from the students and facilitators, the opportunity to use the sessions as a platform for interprofessional education was identified. Topics created so far include self-care, building resilience, managing professional boundaries, and responding to disclosures of abuse. These thirty-minute education topics will sit within the online sessions, being delivered on rotation every fortnight for the remainder of 2023. As students collaborate in this environment, we aim to create opportunities for deep learning (Smith & Colby, 2007). A brief evaluation is embedded for students to rate the session as an opportunity for learning and to connect with others. This presentation will explore how the rural health education team has facilitated the creation of a hybrid learning environment that connects interprofessional health students who are geographically spread and showcase some of the content created and evaluation outcomes to date.
