Abstract
Social work has important roles in shaping, implementing, and evaluating disaster policy responses. Disaster policy can have significant impacts on groups and communities, particularly those dealing with disadvantage, and social workers are crucial in securing inclusive and just decision-making processes. This chapter emphasises the diverse contribution of social work knowledge and practices to local, national, and international disaster policy highlighting key learnings from previous disaster events and important ethico-political considerations for social workers. It connects the scope and parameters of policy in disaster management with the roles and responsibilities for social work, emphasising that policy is not only the institutional, colonial, and political manifestations of disaster management objectives, but important focal points for critical social work practice. To conclude, an overview of the chapters included in this section of the text is provided.
