Abstract
Maintaining the integrity of assessments is an important role of higher education institutions (HEIs). This is because assessments provide evidence of learner achievement and competency in qualifications conferred by HEIs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HEIs rapidly transitioned to remote and online assessments which were marred with potential for increased incidence of academic dishonest and an explosion in creative ways to do so. Absence of physical invigilation, anxiety among students, easy access to the learning content online, reduced resilience with online learning and academic inexperience in designing in assessments fit for the online environment increased opportunities for cheating, collusion and plagiarism in assessments.(1)
In medical radiation science (MRS), academic dishonesty may increase the incidence of professional dishonesty which has dire consequences for patients, regulatory bodies and HEIs. Patient care and safety may be compromised leading to medicolegal issues, registration of practitioners that do not meet the standards of the profession, loss of reputation for HEIs and a culture where academic dishonesty is normalised which then impacts healthcare delivery.(2)
There is a growing need for all stakeholders to be aware of the prevalence of academic dishonesty, measures to mitigate them and potential impact on professional practice.(3)
The aim of the presentation will be to increase awareness of academic dishonesty, discuss the implications on all stakeholders within the MRS profession and steps to mitigate it.
