Abstract

Today's Gospel parables about the Kingdom or Reign of God, in the context of our other readings, remind me of those jokes which begin 'I've got some good news and some bad news'. The good news about God's reign is its desirability, its joyfulness, its praiseworthiness, its power to transform our lives, even our suffering, as our epistle, psalm and Gospel all testify. The bad news is that God's reign is disruptive, and unsettling, drawing us beyond lives of pious convention; it's indiscriminate, and even dangerous to be caught up in.
