Abstract
Americans who viewed images from Abu Ghraib, Iraq, recoiled in horror. No matter what they thought of the victims, the conduct displayed by U.S. soldiers was, almost without exception, perceived as beyond the pale. Those who could be identified in the images were charged and convicted. Small fry, but their pillorying served a public purpose.
