Abstract
‘Public Theology is an indispensable dimension of the calling of the church’
(p. 1). This is the conviction which underpins Heinrich Bedford-Strohm’s new
collection of essays on public theology, Liberation Theology for a Democratic
Society. The essays are the fruits of Bedford-Strohm’s long engagement with
and active role in public theology as a pressing calling of the church in the
twenty-first century. Indeed, Bedford-Strohm is uniquely able to incorporate
insights from both the theoretical and practical dimensions of public theology,
having founded the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Research Center for Public Theology
at the University of Bamberg in 2008 and, more recently, having served as a
bishop in the Lutheran Church of Bavaria and Chairman of the council of the
Evangelical church in Germany. He has been writing on public theology for
much of his career.
