Abstract
Background
Lifted is centered on one day in the life of a group of individuals who use the elevator in the Bank West Tower in Perth. Lifted consists of six 10-minute plays written by six different playwrights from across Australia and was assembled and directed by the founding members of “The Kitchen Sink Collective,” Soseh Yekanians, Gabrielle Metcalf and Shane Pike and investigated how three independent directors could come together and direct one unified piece of theatre.
Contribution
Lifted was a unique piece of theatre. Firstly, it explored how a performance could be directed by three separate directors at different periods in time, but come together as a unified whole. Secondly, it explored how one 60-minute piece of theatre could be developed from six separate playwrights from across Australia who had never met and were only given the brief that the 10-minute piece they were to write was set in a lift. Thirdly, the directors took the individual pieces and through rehearsals and theatrical explorations constructed the show Lifted. Lifted was the debut show for The Kitchen Sink Collective, whose purpose is to translate academic research to mainstream performance and particularly in this piece the significance of the director’s role in the rehearsal room and within the setting of “shared leadership”.
Significance
Lifted was performed in the “Castello” at the 2013 Perth Fringe Festival to audiences of 40 and ran for seven performances altogether. Originally Lifted was to have a season of five shows, but due to the popularity of the show two extra performances were later scheduled in by Fringe. The review which Lifted received during the festival was favourable.
