Abstract

This chapter commences with an overview of the historical perceptions
of childhood, and of listening to children. Next, children with speech,
language and communication needs are identified, and described as an
important group to listen to. Historical, present and future techniques
of listening to children and young people with speech, language and
communication needs are outlined. The chapter concludes with insights
gained from listening to children, and an exhortation to use our 'listening
ears'.
