Abstract

Cancer is a leading cause of death in Australia, with an estimated 151,000 new cases and 49, 000 deaths in 2021. The treatment offered to patients is long, difficult and with various complications requiring ongoing support. Usually, people who share this complex journey with the diagnosed person are members of family, friends, neighbours, and relatives, who are defined as informal caregivers. This presentation aims to share the findings of the scoping literature review from Australian and international academic journal articles conducted per the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) protocol for scoping reviews. Searches were undertaken using Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Informit, EBSCOHOST and SCOPUS. Selected studies comprised peer-reviewed primary studies published in the English language between 2013 to June 2023. Using a thematic analysis approach to data analysis, the findings highlight the experiences and perspectives of informal caregivers and the gaps in service provision for informal caregivers in regional-rural Australia. Furthermore, the role of social workers and the recommendations from the regional-rural Australian perspective are shared.
