Abstract

This creative writing thesis takes the form of a historical novel. It is set in the Ottoman Empire, in 1666, when a false messiah, Sabbatai Zevi, inflamed the Jewish community with his claims of the dawning of a new age. The thesis offers a unique account of this movement, and of the Jannisary who was sent to investigate Zevi's activities. The thesis also includes an exegesis which examines the history of the era, and its reflection in works of literature.
