Abstract

This article describes the structure function and development of Meibomian glands. It includes the current views about their lipid composition, control of lipid synthesis, their innervation and how secretion is controlled. The lipids of the Meibomian gland contribute to the outer (lipid) layer of the tear film and this article describes the proposed functions of this layer and various models that describe its likely structure. Common pathology and how the Meibomian glands are assessed clinically are also described.
