Abstract

Identification of speech sound disorder (SSD) in children who are multilingual is challenging for speech-language pathologists. This is because many features of typical multilingual speech acquisition overlap with features of SSD in monolingual children. There is also a lack of appropriate tools and methods that could make identification of SSD in multilingual children as easy as for monolingual children. We will describe features of multilingual speech acquisition and evidence-based methods for differential diagnosis of language differences and SSD. Examples will be given of how these methods have been used clinically with speakers of a range of languages.
