Myths in Shadow Theatre: From 'Thief of Stars' to 'The Alchemist’s Jar'

Abstract

The Green Beetle Company tells stories long forgotten which have not yet been told. This presentation reviews our creative practice research regarding real and speculative Egyptian medieval shadow theatre (khayal al-zill) and how this informs experimental collaborative performances between emerging writers,
regional Australian musicians, and shadow puppetry.

Through the development of 'The Thief of Stars' (2021)—in which we asked ‘What if Aladdin and Faust were the same story?’—we challenged the global hegemony of Disney by reminding audiences of the original story from 1705. In 'The Alchemist’s Jar' (2023), we collaborated with the Assai Quartet to expand
the scale and complexity of our mythic performances, weaving together classical music, bardcore, and new translations from Arabic, French, and Italian across an intricate song cycle.

This presentation discusses challenges for myth representation and interpretation through our current works-in-progress. Together, these will demonstrate how innovative shadow play with live music continues to create intimate, compelling, and mesmerising spaces for myths, legends,
and fairy tales, old and new.
