Abstract

This session explores the diverse facets of mental health service accessibility for LGBTQIA+ individuals in rural areas using the Levesque Conceptual Framework. Focused on the Abilities of Populations, the analysis delves into challenges in perceiving, seeking, reaching, paying, and engaging with mental health care. From discrimination impacting healthcare perceptions to economic barriers hindering access, the session unravels the complexities influencing service utilisation.

Drawing on extensive research, the presentation addresses discrimination's impact on healthcare-seeking behaviour, the role of social environments, and the significance of inclusive healthcare services. It emphasises the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals and discusses economic barriers, including service costs and access disparities. The session aims to provide insights into developing more inclusive mental health services, advocating for comprehensive provider training, LGBTQIA+-friendly healthcare environments, and supportive networks. It encourages dialogue on policy implications and community-based interventions to address factors affecting mental health service accessibility for rural LGBTQIA+ individuals.
