Abstract

Notation II seeks to explore the underworld, the inescapable beneath. In the moment of turning, fear leads to paralysis. Notation II grasps and gasps, searching for the surface but remaining below.

It fights against the sonnets, against the soft acceptance of death, to give space to grief for those not embraced by the river.

1 x animated film: “organic”An immersive exhibition experience, the new installation showcases a suite of immersive audio-visual works that engage audiences in the most pressing issue of our time, our interdependence with the natural world. The Turning draws from the timeless Greek myth of Orpheus and the rich metaphors embodied in The Sonnets to Orpheus by Rainer Maria Rilke - a form of parable that explores wonder, fragility, love, conflict, and loss.

Through sound, animation, light, sculpture, poetry and video, The Turning reimagines the Lane Cove River and celebrates the presence of rivers in our lives and their impact felt at various physical, emotional, and subliminal levels.

This exhibition marks tranSTURM’s 10th anniversary – a decade of creating deeply immersive and site-specific installation artworks.

tranSTURM – Chris Bowman, Anita Kelly, Rachel Walls and Rachael Priddel with original sound composition by Roger Mills.

Lighting design by Mike Day and featuring the animation of Holger Deuter and Jason Benedek animating the choreography of Dean Walsh.
