Abstract
Notation IV is a small wonderbox, or to be more accurate, a sonnet box - an optical toy that presents animation projected across a range of panes that grants the illusion of dimension to a set of three animations presented so as to provide foreground, mid, and rear scenic elements.
In the context of The Turning, the sonnet box is a whisper to the viewer, who must peer into the box closely, and it gives to the viewer important lines of Rilke's The Sonnets to Orpheus, out of which the ideological approach to this exhibition are generated.

An immersive exhibition experience, the new installation showcases a suite of immersive audio-visual works that engage audiences in the most pressing issue of our time, our interdependence with the natural world. The Turning draws from the timeless Greek myth of Orpheus and the rich metaphors embodied in The Sonnets to Orpheus by Rainer Maria Rilke - a form of parable that explores wonder, fragility, love, conflict, and loss.
Through sound, animation, light, sculpture, poetry and video, The Turning reimagines the Lane Cove River and celebrates the presence of rivers in our lives and their impact felt at various physical, emotional, and subliminal levels.
This exhibition marks tranSTURM’s 10th anniversary – a decade of creating deeply immersive and site-specific installation artworks.
tranSTURM – Chris Bowman, Anita Kelly, Rachel Walls and Rachael Priddel with original sound composition by Roger Mills.
Lighting design by Mike Day and featuring the animation of Holger Deuter and Jason Benedek animating the choreography of Dean Walsh.
This exhibition is supported by Create NSW’s annual organisation grant and is part of Art Month 2022
