Numeracy in action in family shopping experiences: A view from the trolley

Research output: Other contribution to conferenceAbstractpeer-review

Abstract

In this short communication, we will introduce a current pilot study in which we are documenting the ways in which children and their families engage in everyday numeracy as they participate in shopping experiences. The study is underpinned by the notion that mathematical learning opportunities exist in the everyday activities of families, outside of the home, childcare centre, or school. Six families, with children ranging from 18 months to 10 years, were recorded whilst undertaking their shopping using a trolley mounted with a custom-built Go-Pro© camera rig (nicknamed "trolley-cam"). In this presentation, we will share selected "trolley-cam" data and vignettes of family numeracy engagement in action.

OtherMERGA 40 will be held in Melbourne, at Monash University’s Clayton campus—the site of the first MERGA conference. The conference will be coordinated by Ann Gervasoni, Helen Forgasz and colleagues from Monash University, under the theme of ’40 years on: We are still learning’. This theme is both timely and apt, since the conference will be celebratory, reflective and forward thinking as we attempt to build upon the work of some of the world’s most influential mathematics education researchers and practitioners.

This special anniversary conference will include a number of participants from MERGA 1, as well as many colleagues coming to MERGA for the first time. The MERGA conference is renowned for being encouraging and welcoming. Within this highly supportive environment, the conference provides participants with the opportunity to engage in a range of professionally stimulating activities.
