Abstract

We believe the scoping review by Heywood et al will be a seminal paper in physical therapy in mental health. The systematic approach taken by the authors to mapping a diverse body of literature has significant value for the profession. They focused on the role of physical therapy in mental health primarily through the lens of the medical model of mental disorder (i.e., the psychiatric diagnostic system). This is important, but in this letter to the editor, we argue that discussions of the role of physical therapy in mental health can be further expanded by conceptualizing mental health using the Dual Continua Model of Mental Health and Mental Illness and the Power Threat Meaning Framework.
