    Abstract

    This chapter in the inaugural State of the Print News Media in Australia report (2006) was published in a 103 page book by the Australian Press Council and online through the Council's website. The content analysis, which formed the basis of the chapter, was the most extensive ever undertaken of the Australian print news media. Fourteen newspapers were surveyed for each of 28 days randomly selected by computer in 2005. In all 2448 articles were analysed and coded into one of 17 categories, ranging from politics to entertainment. Article length was also recorded and sources used in the story were coded between 12 categories and further coded by gender. Story framing was also coded between 12 categories.
