Abstract
Not to judge a book by its cover is sage advice. But I do.
Provenance Research Today: Principles, Practice, Problems
has an awesome cover. And the contents are just as good.
The book’s cover depicts the verso of an unknown painting
(I scoured the book searching for the painting’s title and
acknowledgement, but it’s not given – tut-tut), which is a
clue to the book’s contents. The verso of a painting can tell
us so much about its history, whether that is about who has
owned it, or its exhibition history, or indeed, details about the
painting itself. Such is the intrigue of the verso of a painting,
and therefore the curiosity that is sparked when the reader is
invited to open the book’s cover.
