Abstract

This chapter focuses on the place of cognitive strategies in occupational therapy assessment and management of reduced physical capacity and the way cognition may hinder or enhance physical aspects of performance. This chapter describes an ecological standardised measure of cognitive strategy use, the Perceive, Recall, Plan and Perform (PRPP) System of Task Analysis and Intervention. An example of how the PRPP Assessment could be employed as an observational assessment format is provided. Information processing theory is coupled with notions of occupational performance to demonstrate how difficulty with learning
new skills affects occupational performance.
