Abstract
This chapter defines performance management processes and provides an overview of its western origins. The strategic importance of performance management in a global context is considered, and the benefits and problems associated with typical approaches to performance management are examined. Subsequently, the factors that impact on performance management in different cultural contexts are considered. Throughout the chapter regular face-to-face contact, repeated opportunity for feedback, and performance follow-up are stressed as key factors that help contribute to a positive global performance management culture.
