Abstract

Learning outcomes

The material in this chapter will assist you to:

• describe the incidence of perinatal depression and anxiety
• identify who is vulnerable within the population at risk of developing perinatal difficulties
• identify risk factors to look for when screening women during the perinatal period
• describe the care-planning process when working with women with severe mental illness during the perinatal period
• describe risk assessment for the parent–infant dynamic
• understand the risk–benefit dynamic process used when deciding on medication options for women during the perinatal period
• understand the importance of working within an interprofessional collaboration framework in the perinatal period
• understand the importance of including the partner when assessing and treating a woman experiencing perinatal difficulties
• examine some of the therapeutic modalities used when working with women and their families during the perinatal period.
