Abstract
It is common knowledge that a number of important English intellectuals became Communist or Catholic during the interwar period. These conversions shaped some of the most famous literature of the period, not to mention the socio-political and even military events of the day. While most historians of interwar Britain have acknowledged this phenomenon, and the biographers of the more famous intellectuals have attempted an explanation for the individual conversions, this is an attempt at explaining the phenomenon as a whole.
