    Abstract

In this chapter, we explore several professional characteristics of preschool teachers which facilitate their support for children’s transition from preschool to school. Characteristics that promote optimal transitions experiences include the ability to engage in respectful and reciprocal relationships with a range of stakeholders; a sound understanding of transition as a process; appreciation of the social and individual nature of transition; and awareness of preschool teachers’ impact on transition experiences. These characteristics are compatible with the reframing of transition to school embodied in the Transition to School: Position Statement.
