Abstract

Charles Sturt University presented the fifth cohort of graduates from the Animation and Visual Effects degree on Sunday 3rd November, 2013 with an official premiere of their newly released films. Since the entering the degree in 2011, the students had evolved from basic hand-drawn 2D art through to sophisticated internationally-competitive 3D animations over 3 dedicated years. Embracing the rich history of traditional animation with the latest advances in industry-leading software, the students had meticulously crafted every frame (often with many layers) for the audience. The edit was 36 minutes runtime representing over 54,000 frames of work and twice the number for stereoscopic versions. As executive producer I organised the event and compiled the films as our first industry standard 3D Stereoscopic Digital Cinema Package (DCP) for non-theatrical release. Several films have now gone on to be independently selected for the Melbourne International Animation Festival 2014 and beyond.
